I picked up this book as a freebie, and immediately I was hooked. The book follows the journeys of four men who are posted at Hadrian's Wall in 4th century Roman Britain. There's Justinus, a solid, stoic man whose father also serves in the military; Paternus, a slightly-younger man who seeks to find out more about what happened to his family; Leocadius, a handsome, flirtatious playboy who does not take anything seriously; and Vitalis, a thoughtful, quiet man who becomes drawn into the conflict between Christianity and the "pagan" Roman religion. After abandoning the Wall after seeing it fall to a man called Valentinus, our four "heroes of the Wall" split up and find themselves in very different predicaments: some centered around Valentinus, the man responsible for the Wall's collapse, religion, and other political intrigues.I found myself diving into this history with great vigor. I spent a great deal of time referencing Wikipedia to learn more about Roman Britain and how the Roman army was organized. The book seems more tuned towards those with an understanding of the historical context than the general lay population. Rather than viewing this as a weakness, however, it made me interested in learning more.
The characters were fairly well-developed. There were a lot of moving parts, but they were kept in sync. The book moved at a clipped pace and had many surprises. I'd recommend this book for anyone who's interested in Roman history. I'm looking forward to reading the other installments of this series.

This would be great for anybody curious about Roman controlled Britain. Closer look at Roman military culture and structure. Highly recommend to any fans of historical fiction.
This author has created a masterpiece of intrigue and suspense. There are many twists and turns that will keep you spellbound. The ending is very unexpected. You may not be able to put the book down.
Finishing the third book of the series now and totally enjoying it. It was a little confusing at the beginning keeping the four main characters straight, but the story is interesting given its late Empire setting and the writing is well done. A nice addition to the genre I am glad I stumbled across. Will definitely look forward to reading more from the authors.
I love to read about how the Roman army worked. Maybe it goes back to my Latin classes. Anyway this period of time fascinates me and is now squarely on my radar because of this book. Well written and exciting, it takes the reader back to those brutal days when Rome ruled Britain. Can 't wait to read the other two in the series.
I really wanted to like these books, but the best I can give is two stars for effort. To be brief, the world is still waiting for a good fictionalization of the late Roman, early post Roman period of British history, from a British perspective, with a plausible, interesting narrative to the lives of shadowy figures such as Coel Hen. The author brings virtually every name associated with that era into the plot, but in such a bizarre and inexplicable alternative reality that one can only ask why? Characters seem to wonder aimlessly through the plot, the plot meanders repetitiously between renegade Roman generals, and howling barbarian hordes.
Although this book does not appear to be based upon historical fact, it is an interesting story. Of course, there were many instances of the Picts, et al, attacking the Roman settlements beyond Hardrian's wall, but as far as I am aware of no writing about an attack in the 360-370 AD period. And, unlike most books of this nature, the authors don't have a chapter at the end of the book highlighting any historical references.
In spite of this, it is an interesting book and I found myself wanting to see what happens, and having a hard time putting it down (once it really got started). The authors do a good job of giving a ancient Rome feel for the story. However, there were too many main characters, so that character development was lacking when compared to other books of this nature.
If you like Roman History, I recommend this book, and I am looking forward to reading the next two books in the series. If they are up to this level, which they appear to be based upon the reviews, they will be worth the time.
Denham has done his research and produced a novel worthy of the Roman soldiers who are its main characters. This is no common work of fiction, relying on a sensational narrative of bloody battles and lustful orgies. Instead it is filled with well developed characters who are all too human, with all their strengths and weaknesses. Based on the true events of Rome's struggle to retain its rule over Britain as the Empire itself was starting to crack, it engrosses, educates, and entertains! I look forward to reading the next volume in the series and to 're-reading this one and savoring at my leisure.
