What an interesting story. Christian "Chris" White is half ghost/half witch. Born and raised in the "lower level' of society that is ran by a Demon Lord of Storms. If you want to know how one has a half ghost son, you'll just have to read/listen to the story :)Chris, through the encouragement of a friend, decides to open a paranormal private investigations company. This story leads you through multiple cases, each one impertinent to how the story is laid out and how certain characters meet. The higher the case #, the more current the time. The lower the case # means you are in the past. This is kind of important to know as I was a little confused at first. It doesn't take long to figure out, but still. One other thing that also confused me is Chris couldn't apparate like Doug (his Imp PI partner) can, just walk through doors/walls, etc... but in parts of the book he could. I still can't quite figure that one out.
Speaking of Doug, all of the side characters are just as important and wonderfully written as the MC's. My second personal favorite is Phil and her newly acquired pixie, Jester. OF course my #1 is Sable, the demon lord. Holy hell!!! ((no pun intended)) Not what you would expect a demon lord to be like, quite honestly. I am blown away by how he was written. Even his over presumptuous way with Chris when they first met, you couldn't help but like the guy. He's just kind of a laid back character, except when it comes to Christian. He's funny, smart, intense, and (of course) gorgeous. Who doesn't love a black mop of curls? I mean, srsly!? :D
Anyways, aside from the few small confusions I had, i loved everything about this book!!

Chris and Sable-- sexy, sweet, and hot together. Loved the book format of jumping around in time. Thanks to the reviewer who explained the format, and how the lower case numbers are from the beginning and move up chronologically, so it was easy to follow that the higher the number, the closer to present day you got. I'm sure I would've figured it out, but knowing that going in probably helped me jump into the story quicker. In any case, the book certainly captured my attention and held it rather tightly to the end.
I enjoyed all of the cases, and I loved the main love story. Writing this review after having read book 2 (I wanted to jump in right away after finishing book 1), I think that the MCs' relationship in book 2 feels a little more fleshed out than Chris and Sable's. I don't know why-- maybe the linear format of book 2 makes it more conducive, at least for me? But this in no way takes away from book 1-- at all. I love Chris and Sable. Chris is such a great down-to-earth foil to Sable's demonly (I know it's not a word) greatness. Chris' bling from Sable had me smiling. These two are fun together. And strongly rounding out this cast are Doug and Phil, and the ever-growing list of their clients.
Once again, after having read book 2, I can't wait to reread the series after I finish the first entire series read-through, because cases/things have a way of becoming more of a player in subsequent books. Another words, things will be More Significant as part of the big picture the second time around. (I'm banking on the rest to be just as good as the first two).
Megan Derr has become an auto-buy for me after 3 books. Tournament of Losers, & books 1 & 2 of this series so far.
Highly recommend all of them.
First, let me say that the book description is terrible -- "In a world of demons, goblins, witches, sirens, werewolves, vampires, and so much more, it can be difficult to determine who is guilty of what and why. Chris White is a detective who fearlessly investigates this supernatural world, himself a unique product of it. He will take any case brought to him, but has a particular affinity for helping those who inhabit the poor districts of his city. From strange rituals and runaway vampires, to fighting sorcerers and confronting a demon lord, this paranormal detective will face any challenge--even a dance with the devil." That just doesn't give you any idea what the book is about.
Now we all have times when we want a traditional m/m romance -- lots of angst and emotion with lead characters who have suffered and find their happy endings after much turmoil and strife. If that's what you're in the mood for, set this gem of a book aside until you're ready for something less emo. Or, if you really don't like stories that jump around on a timeline and prefer stories that are laid out in 'real time' you'll have a problem with this one because, as a previous reviewer states, the chapters switch back and forth in time to tell the stories of the characters. And, if you're in the mood for a good smutty read - well there's not a lot of sex in this one, though what there is was well done.
Chris is a Paranormal Detective from the poor side of a town who's overlord is a Storm Demon - unique, he is half ghost and half witch. His partner in the agency is Doug, an imp and in the very first chapter they jump right into a case (so, as the previous reviewer says, pay attention to the case numbers at the beginning of each chapter). We learn from the beginning that Chris is "Consort" but not what that means -- in fact there are a number of terms used that are explained along the way as our detectives solve case after case. But the terms are explained along the way, so don't let yourself be pulled out of the story by worrying what abnormal vs paranormal, etc. means.
In all, I found the characters engaging and fully fleshed out, the manner in which we go back to see the first meetings of the various characters intriguing, and the book an absolute delight to read -- really didn't put it down until I was done.
This was my first book by this author -- I immediately went to and purchased two more books she has done and can only hope they're half as enjoyable!
