I had never heard of the author Nikki Gemmell before I purchased "The Bride Stripped Bare", but I'm very glad I did. It's about a suburban housewife who feels stifled in her marriage and yearns for something more. Sounds familiar and trite, but the book is not. In diary format it tells the story of her journey of self discovery of her sexual needs and desires and is beautifully, even lyrically, written. As I read I kept thinking, "Yes, this rings true, I recognize these feelings." There are graphic accounts of sexual pleasure, so be forewarned, but there are also sharp insights into intimate relationships. This book may be classified as erotica but it is literature, unlike the currently popular "steamy" novels. The book will probably appeal most to women, but any man reading it will get some insight as to what goes on in a woman's head.

I wanted to like this. I made it halfway thru the book, and found myself not really caring about any of the characters. Self-focused for the...not-win. I couldn't bring myself to finish.
I recall that this book was quite controversial when it was first published, presumably for its explicit sex scenes and the publicity over its 'anonymous' author. It is written in a diary format and details the journey from happy marriage, to not so happy marriage, to a sexually liberating affair, to unsatisfying sexual fantasies, to reconciliation and pregnancy. For me the sex scenes were not erotic, but felt rather cold. And I couldnt really empathise with the main character as she just seemed too self absorbed. The ending was unsatisfying, and I felt confused about the whole dissappearing act. So a bit of a let down, but maybe I was expecting too much based on all the hype that surrounds this book.
"The Bride Stripped Bare" was orginially published anonymously because, as Gemmell claims in the novel, she wanted to drop inhibitions and write as truthful a book as possible. I believe she has succeeded in creating an exquisitely honest novel...so blunt, in fact, that it drew me in and I couldn't put it down.

It must be said that this work is extremely graphic (erotic), in a sexual sense, however I believe this is warranted because the character's realization and expansion of her true self manifests itself in her sexuality. It is done very matter-of-factly, even maturely.

I reccommend "The Bride Stripped Bare" for adults interested in women's studies, the realization of self, and for those who revel in discovering different literary forms. Women would most likely be more perceptive to its content.

This was an intense read. What do you want? What do you think you want? How are you going to get what you need? I liked it, but I didn't like the fact that I could relate to the story in so many respects. If you're ready to shine a bright light on the darker side of your personality, then by all means, read this. Don't be surprised if you're left feeling very raw and exposed.
I gave the book 3 stars because although I like Nikki Gemmell's writing style, I found the story sordid at times and was upset by the main character's deception of her husband, even though the author tries to make it understandable. The ending seemed sudden, out of character and in final analysis unsatisfactory. I preferred the other book I have read by Gemmell "With My Body". I would recommend the book to anyone who is fascinated by the revelation of the inner self and development of a woman
