This is probably one of the best classics ever written. While it is revered in Europe, it is all but unknown in the United States. I re-read the book recently in the English translation, some 30 years after I first read it in Europe. I could not believe how freshly written it seemed. It proves once again that classics never age. The novel centers around two brothers from the turn of the 20th century and explores the complexity of many kinds of human relationships. You will find yourself in at least one of them.

It also portrays French culture and burgeois life-style of the era when France was turning from a staunchly Catholic into a secular country.

The sequel, Summer of 1914, earned the Nobel Prize in 1937. Roger Martin du Gard is well known and respected in Europe. It is not quite clear why he is barely known in the United States. The language and themes are as contemporary today as they were when the book was written.

This rare jewel is not to be missed by any serious reader.

Not all old books are good reads - this one is outstanding and extremely thought provoking. Even though you couldn't put the book down, you had to in order to absorb the thought, information, or ideas presented to see how they contributed to your own.

The author never missed a beat and never left you hanging with an I wonder....

This is a timeless piece. One of the best pieces of Literature ever. I cannot believe that Du Gard is not more read in the US. I agree with the previous review.
This is one of the best pieces of classic literature ever written. It is not quite clear why hardly anyone has ever heard about in the United States. The novel, by Nobel Prize winning du Gard, is revered in Europe. It is not to be missed by any serious reader. Beware, though, that this is not the complete work. The English translation is divided in two volumes. This one, The Thibaults, is followed by Summer 1914. And since it is the same opus, one really should read both.
Suffering from a rare form of masochism -- the compulsion to read novels by obscure Nobel Literature Prize winners -- I picked up the "The Thibaults" at the library two months ago. Having read all 874 pages, I feel like an amateur marathoner who has experienced euphoria, self-doubt, exhaustion and, finally, the pride of finishing the darn thing.
Before undertaking this project, readers should Google "Thibaults Martin Du Gard." They will find an excellent blog titled "Neglected Books Page," which reprints excerpts from reviewers, including, Andre Gide, Albert Camus and Malcolm Lowry.
For what it's worth, I'm ambivalent. On the plus side, I agree with a reviewer quoted on the above-mentioned site that the book has "the merit of defining a certain kind of average Frenchness — that is, bourgeois anti-bourgeoisism — which existed strongly at the time." This is the real France, not the art-loving, absinthe drinking, free-loving, expatriate-ridden places popularized in modern fiction. Martin du Gard also has a fine eye for psychological nuance. He is a master of dialogue juxtaposed with interior monologues that capture ingeniously the human proclivity to mask thoughts with speech.
Unfortunately, "The Thibaults" is a technical mess. Central characters appear and disappear, presumably to reappear in the sequel, "Summer of 1914." Much of the novel violates the "show don't tell," rule of fiction writing. Huge chunks of crucial action are related in long quotes from letters, conversations and reports. The book may have the longest and most detailed death bed act in literary history. It runs for more than 100 pages. How does a primer on the stages of kidney failure make for exalted reading?
A reviewer on this site urges me to run another marathon and read "Summer of 1914." I'll pass.
