My nephew is nearly 30.

Allow me to digress a bit. We all write up Christmas lists. ALL of us, children and adult. I started it years 33 years ago. Let's face it, most people give us gifts THEY like or think WE would like. At 16 I started to collect Stein's. Do you know how expensive a REAL stein is? People won't buy those for you, not the real ones, the Avon crap yes, But not the decorative beautiful one's from Germany or even Solvang for that matter. So someone got it into their heads that Stein=mug=cup. Next thing I know I am on the coffee cup queen. Why I have no idea, but after sending over 300 coffee cups to the good will (I got fed up with dusting them) I had enough and said EVERYONE writes a wish year every year and we exchange them at the families Valentines day weekend brunch. WE use those lists for birthdays, graduations, Easter baskets, Fourth of July favors, Christmas, Halloween, Just because, anything and everything and we stick to it.

My nephew has had this book on his list for a few years and could not find a good clean copy anywhere. I thought he was going to jump right out of his shoes when he opened this! He was dancing all over the floor yelling yes yes yes, thank you thank you thank you. It WAS a good clean copy. He has long since read it so many times the pages are worn and coming apart from the book and the cover is frayed.....and the book is once again on his holiday wish list :)

Great book gives you a little bit more insight on Gizmo
Gremlins was just a blast to read. I have never seen the movie but I heard enough about it to want to read a novelization of it and I really thought that this book was a perfect blend of amusing horror and thrilling scenes. I laughed out loud several times while reading, especially when the old woman met her end when one of the gremlins messed with her chair lift. This is one of those books that sounds absolutely terrible if you read the plot summary on the book before starting. I usually do this after I finish just to see how stupid it sounds and most of the time I think it does. This one somehow pulled off the ridiculous story but only if you aren't big into serious stuff. I had a feeling that Gipe probably had a good time writing the story out and that cheerfulness comes through the book in a way that almost makes it feel like a YA novel. I didn't even bother to check if it is one. I can say that the language is mild and it lacks pointless sex scenes so perhaps it is, but that is no reason not to join the gremlins in their random trouble-making.
Good writing, but not a fan of the writer's version of the creature's origin. The movie keeps it mystical and mysterious, which I like better.
This book is great! It also does a good job of portraying the movie! If your child can't watch the movie, get them the book! The only problem I had with this book was that the Mogwai took more than half of the book to become gremlins. But some advice for you if you want to find out if the movie is kid-friendly, wait until AFTER watching the movie by yourself before deciding if your kid can watch it. But it can be kid-friendly for some people. For example, I am a child myself! And I watched the movie first! Either way, the basic story is very memorable and heart warming, but creepy and filled with suspense at the same time. Book or movie, this is a story you'll never forget.
This is the perfect example of why I love to read movie adaptations of my favorite classic movies. The story from the film is there but there is so much added or altered content it feels like something new. Some of the new things not seen in the movie. The origin of the Mogwai's. Full blown conversations between Gizmo and Spike as Mogwai's and Spike is such a campy mustache curling villain with his dialog. A lot more Kate. Kate is involved early in the Mogwai story line. She actually goes with Billy and Pete to take the Mogwai to the science teacher. The classic Santa in the chimney speech is there too but happens much earlier when Billy and her are walking home.

I personally don't care if these books are "good" or not. I just love reading all the new content. Honestly if there was no movie of this I would not recommend the book because of some of the things previously mentioned but because it is Gremlins and is not a word for word recreation of the film I HIGHLY recommend it.
